* Grades 3-5 -- First-place Maroon ran its record to 5-0, with a
28-20 win over Red. Red's Shawn Moxley led all scorers with 16 points.
Orange nipped Black, 26-25. Matthew Walsh led Orange with 10 points, and Jason Stevens scored 11 for Black.
Kyle Zentz scored 30 points to lead Gold to a 45-17 victory over Green. Green's Brandon Wood scored 11.
* Grades 6-8 -- Mike Haskell scored 28 points to lead first-place Gold (5-0) to a 42-39 win over Green. Nick Jenkins' 24 points paced Green.
Black beat Blue, 54-35. Mike Wissinger scored 14 points for the winners, and Adam Reese had a game-high 17 for Blue.
Beau Ridgway scored 28 points to lead Maroon's 49-43 win over Red. Brian Levin paced Red with 14.
* Grades 3-4 -- The Spurs took the division title with a 21-14 victory over the Rockets in St. John's League play. Ben Yingling and Todd Edmondson paced the Spurs' attack with six and five points, respectively. Hunter Hart and Kevin Collins each scored four for the Rockets.
The Nets edged the Terps, 17-16. Andy Hochalter had four points for the winners, and Antoin Magruder added three. Chris Nowakowski and Josh Schonberger each scored four for the Terps.
* Grades K-2 -- The Lions clinched the St. John's divisional title with a 20-2 win over the Spurs. John Clayton and Brendon Reisdorf each scored six points for the winners.
* Grades 7-8 -- Coons of Westminster won twice to improve their Carroll County League record to 6-1, second in its division.
They beat Charles Carroll, 50-41, despite 31 points from Chris Mathias. Mathias, who hit four three-pointer in the fourth quarter, paced a Charles Carroll rally that nearly overcome a 25-point deficit. Mike McComas led the Coons' attack with 18 points; Robbie Vaughn added 10.
The Coons upended Mount Airy No. 2, 54-14. McComas scored 15 points in that one; Chris Swedberg and Jason Howdyshell each had nine. Mount Airy's Jeremy Johnson had eight points.
Gymnastics
The home gymnasium was good for the Perna Gymnastics Club its fourth annual Winter Wonderland Tournament.
Competing against six other teams, Perna's Level VI girls squad placed first and its Level V team, second.
Eight of Perna's Level VI competitors placed in individual events.
Amanda Ebaugh (9-11 age group) scored 9.30 on vault (first), 8.80 on uneven bars (third), 8.75 on balance beam (sixth) and 35.65 all-around (first).
Jennifer Forman (9-11) scored 8.70 on bars (fifth).
Lauren Prentice (9-11) had 9.20 on vault (second), 8.90 on bars (first) and 34.10 all-around (sixth).
Kasey Thomas (12-14) was 8.10 on beam (fourth).
Courtney Prentice (12-14) had 8.50 on vault (second) and 8.30 on beam (fourth).
Erin Graf (12-14) scored 8.30 on vault (fourth).
Aimee Willet (12-14) scored 8.60 on vault (first), 8.15 on beam (sixth) and 9.05 on floor exercises (second).
Kelly Shabinaw had 8.30 on beam (fourth) and 8.75 on floor (fourth).
Three Level V girls placed. Claire Tull (7-8) was 8.60 on beam (first) and 33.75 all-around (fourth). Katie Mechalske (9-11) scored an 8.15 on vault (fourth). Holly Baust (9-11) had 8.10 on vault (fourth), 8.20 on beam (sixth) and 32.35 all-around (sixth).
Two Level VIII girls placed. Becky Furhman (12-13) had 8.40 on beam (first), 8.85 on floor (first) and 33.40 all-around (third). Cindy Reese had 8.50 on floor (first) and 29.80 all-around (second).
Four gymnasts from the Class VI boys team placed.
John Roscoe (7-9) had 5.00 on floor exercises (second), 5.30 on pommel horse (second), 5.10 on rings (second), 5.00 on vault (tied for first), 4.30 on parallel bars (third), 5.00 on high bar (second) and 29.70 all-around (second).
Desmond Grady (7-9) scored 4.70 on parallel bars (third).
Jared Craig (10-11) had 4.70 on floor (first), 5.40 on pommel horse (first), 4.60 on rings (second), 4.60 on high bar (second) and 27.50 all-around (second).
I= Adam Tenney (10-11) had a 4.10 on parallel bars (second).
Indoor soccer Under-14 girls -- The Freedom Strikers closed out a championship session at the Supersports Indoor Arena with a 4-1 Club Division win over the Columbia Courage.
Shanna Ziegenfuss paced the winners' attack with three goals and Alison Rabinovitz added one for Freedom (7-0). Strikers' keeper Erin Whetzel played an outstanding game in the nets.
The South Carroll Devils scored the tying goal with a little over a minute remaining in the game to knot the Freedom Dynamo, 2-2, in the Carroll Indoor Sports Center.
Wrestling
It was a big weekend for youth wrestling fans at Francis Scott Key High School.
Saturday, some 400 youngsters from 22 Maryland Junior Wrestling League teams competed in the Maryland Junior League Age-Weight Tournament.
Sunday, Key was the site of the fourth annual Carroll County Wrestling Championships.
This event, was sponsored by the Westminster Elks Lodge, matched competitors from the county's four Maryland Junior Wrestling League teams.
Six Carroll County wrestlers, including four from the Warriors, took individual titles in Saturday's age-weight fray.
The four winning Warriors were Steve McKenzie (age 11-12, 105 pounds), Scott Wachter (13-15, 90), Tim Hymiller (13-15, 95) and Sean Ward (13-15, 150).
Manchester's Dave Farrow won in the age 11-12, 100-pound class; Westminster's Jared Brown took the age 13-15, 105-pound class.
In ages 6-under, placing third were Francis Scott Key's Dan Conaway (40) and the Warriors' Anthony Winfield (50). Fourth was the Warriors' Nolan Gilliam (55).
Ages 7-8, placing second were Westminster's Robbie Pearre (55) and the Warriors' Charles Osgood (85). Third were Westminster's Jason Brown (60) and Blake Allgood (75) of the Warriors. Andrew Winfield (60), of the Warriors, was fourth.
Ages 9-10, Warriors Dan Gilliam (55), Matt Eder (60) and Nick Kraus (75) placed second. Key's Dan Hollar (80) was third; Kyle Smith (65) of Manchester was fourth.
Ages 11-12, placing third were Key's Travis Fitzgerald (105) and Manchester's Mike Brown (115). Fourth were Manchester's Jesse Aguilar (65) and Westminster's Jimmy Staub (95).
Ages 13-15, Key's Jason Nichols (80), Jason Smith (115) and Jessie Trawinski (heavyweight) were second. The Warriors' Mike Saylor (140) and Kevin Logan (122), also placed second. Third were Manchester's Fred Aguilar (122), and the Warriors' Ryan Taylor (130) and Matt Ash (150).
In the county tourney, Manchester dominated the title count, winning 12 of
the 18 individual championships.
Winning for Manchester were Geoff Leeper (55), Tyler Graham (60), Tyler Alexander (65), Zach Maloff (70), Fran Jackson (75), James Holmes (80), Randy Holmes (107), Adam Boog (115), Dameon Davis (122), Tony Barbera (130), Carl Yelton (140) and Colin Eutsler (150).
Key titlists were Lee Crowl (50), John Muse (85) and Matt Yinger (100).
Winning for Westminster were Bobby Biden (95) and heavyweight Ryan Banks.
Jared Zillmer (90) took a first for the Warriors. Warriors finishing in second place were Kellen Weber (60), Bryan Hamper (75), Tommy Niemeyer (90), Mike Muller (107), Andy Seal (115), Jason Hamper (122), Ryan Taylor (130), Mike Saylor (140) and heavyweight Sean Ward.
Key's second-place finishers were Nate Yinger (65), Donnie Chiaruttini (80) and Billy Null (95).
The Westminster runner-ups were Robbie Pearre (55), Dave Spicer (100) and Jim Sharkey (150).
Manchester wrestlers placing second were Pat Maloff (50), Matt Myers (70), Dylan Howell (85).
Westminster wrestlers finishing third were Josh Corkran (50), Eddie Grimes (70), Chris Reiter (80), Jimmy Reiter (85), Tim Sharkey (122) and Steve Sharkey (150).
Third for the Warriors were Matt Eder (60), Danny Patterson (65), Tim Hymiller (95), Zach Cox (100), Matt Ash (140) and Sean Ward (150).
Wrestlers from Key placing third were Ronnie Howard (75), Darren Hooper (90), Steve Cahoon (107), Frank Hansborough (115) and heavyweight Jess Trawinski.
Manchester's Andy Myers (55) and Pat Gast (130) were also third.
The Warriors' Dan Gilliam (50) was fourth, as were teammates Mike Hughes (55), Brian Evans (65), Robert Law (75), Jesse Stank (85), Scott Wachter (90), Keith Knutson (107), Mike Osgood (130) and Andy Ward (140).
Francis Scott Key wrestlers finishing fourth were Joe Putman (70), Jason Smith (115) and Chris Putman (122).
Fourth for Manchester were Danny Farrow (80), David Farrow (95) and Rodney Gast (100).
Swimming
Fourteen members of the Carroll County YMCA swim team have qualified for the next step in the league's postseason championships.
The youngsters achieved their qualifying times at the recent Chesapeake-Potomac Valley Individual Championships, winning slots in the YMCA's Southern District Qualifying Meet this weekend.
