Bernice E. Meade
Active in Baptist groups
Bernice E. Meade, who was active in Baptist groups, died Friday of cancer at her home on Central Avenue in Baltimore. She was 82.
For more than 20 years, she was president of the Missionary Circle at Israel Baptist Church, 1220 N. Chester St. in East Baltimore. Her husband, the Rev. Edmond D. Meade, who died in 1984, was pastor of the church from 1938 until 1976.
From 1956 until 1966, Mrs. Meade was president of the Women's Auxiliary of the Maryland Baptist Convention. She was a member of other church groups, including the United Baptist Women of Maryland, the Baptist Ministers' Wives and the Ministers' Widows Alliance of Baltimore and Vicinity.
She was active in community affairs and was a volunteer for many voter registration drives. She was a Republican judge at polling places on election days.
She was born Bernice E. West in Baltimore and graduated from Douglass High School and the Cortez Peters Business School.
Services were planned for noon today at Israel Baptist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Bernice M. Waker; a granddaughter, Andrea E. M. Waker; six nieces; and a nephew. All are of Baltimore.
Norman Thompson
Supermarket stock clerk
Norman R. Thompson, a retired supermarket stock clerk, died Sunday of cancer at his home on Royce Avenue in Northwest Baltimore. He was 61.
The Baltimore native retired nearly a year ago from the Basics Food Center in the Linthicum area. He had worked at Basics and Food-A-Rama stores for many years.
Services were to be held at noon today at March Funeral Home West, 4300 Wabash Ave., Baltimore.
Survivors include a son, Antonio Hemingway of Baltimore; five daughters, Kimberly Hemingway, Danielle Hemingway, Shannon Thompson, Frances Rose and Norma Crawford, all of Baltimore; six sisters, Minerva Thompson, Delores Scipio, Anna Drakes, Thelma Watkins, Myrna Jackson and Shirley Boyd, all of Baltimore; three brothers, Eugene Thompson of Baltimore, Clement Thompson of West River and Alvin Thompson of Salinas, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
