Linthicum parking firm gains $4.3 million pact

Linthicum entrepreneur Lisa Renshaw's Penn Parking Inc. has been awarded a $4.3 million contract to run parking facilities at 37 Washington-area Metrorail stations.

The three-year contract, which took effect last month but was not announced until yesterday, covers more than 32,000 parking spaces in the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland, and Fairfax and Arlington counties in Virginia.

"I wanted something in Washington so I could expand the company," said Ms. Renshaw, who beat out about a dozen other bidders for the job, after initially losing the contract. The original winner was unable to perform, and bidding was reopened.

Ms. Renshaw said her bid was the lowest among four companies.

"I grew up rubbing two dimes together," said Ms. Renshaw. "I learned how to economize."

Penn Parking manages three lots and five garages in Baltimore, including three city-owned lots near the University of Maryland at Baltimore, City Hall and the headquarters of the Enoch Pratt Free Library.

With the new contract, Penn Parking has doubled its number of employees to 120.
