CHARLES TOWN, W. Va. -- The Charles Town Races has canceled tonight's scheduled 10-race card to allow track maintenance crews time to repair the three-quarter-mile racing strip.
Track superintendent Charlie O'Bannon said workers planned to remove as much moisture as possible from the track yesterday before removing the cushion, the 4-inch top layer of sand and soil, last night.
"We'll start peeling back the cushion around midnight and should have it off by daybreak," said O'Bannon.
Track officials, jockeys and horsemen plan to inspect the track base at 8 this morning. Barring the discovery of major problems, workers will put down a dry cushion late today and open the track for training tomorrow morning.
"We're hopeful that the cancellation will allow us to resume racing Saturday night," said track general manager Donald Hudson. "We should know where we stand Friday morning."
