Three volunteer drivers from Maryland will join the "Pastors for Peace U.S.-Cuba Friendshipment Caravan," carrying bicycles and medical aid destined for an ecumenical center in Cuba on Saturday.
The Howard County Friends of Central America and the Central America Solidarity Committee will sponsor a dinner from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Wilde Lake Interfaith Center to welcome about 15 trucks and 30 drivers from the northeast route of the caravan.
The dinner will feature speakers from the caravan and entertainment by the Malcom X Park Drummers and the Companions.
This is the third national Friendshipment undertaken by Pastors for Peace to offset shortages of food, fuel and medicine in Cuba.
The organization is led by the Rev. Lucius Walker Jr. of the Inter-Religious Foundation for Community Organizing. The Friendshipment will travel throughout the United States and Canada, collecting humanitarian supplies such as powdered milk, medicine, school supplies and bicycles, which will be donated to several churches in Cuba for distribution.
The cost of the dinner is $8 per person, $5 for low-income participants and $20 per family.
