The venting noise of a partially clogged exhaust pipe being forced open by pressure sent fire equipment scurrying to the Giant Food at Cranberry Square Shopping Center about 1 p.m. yesterday.
Firefighters from Westminster, Reese, Pleasant Valley and Manchester were dispatched to the food market in response to a call for an explosion and fire in the bakery department of the store.
The first units on the scene discovered the cause of the "explosion" and found no fire in the store.
Firefighters determined it was not necessary to close the food market, and about 100 customers continued to shop.
About 25 employees, visible from the inside of the store, continued their duties while firefighters searched the area above the oven for possible fire or damage.
Units were out for about 35 minutes.
No one was injured.
