Harte giving BRRC new direction

Two of the things that Jeff Sanborn most wanted to do when he took over the presidency of the Baltimore Road Runners Club a little more than a year ago were to bring in new ideas and new people.

In respect to Ed Harte, his mission is half-accomplished. Harte, track and cross country coach at North County High in Anne Arundel County, is a member of the old guard with fresh ideas.

And two of the things that Harte most wants to do are to bring more track and cross country into the club's agenda.

Harte, who will direct the BRRC's Summer Track Series this year with Chris Cucuzzella, promises to include more sprint events.

"A lot of kids run cross country in high school and get out and JTC there's not a lot for them to do," says Harte, 35. "A lot of sprinters in high school and college don't have anywhere to go in the summertime. We're going to have a lot of sprints this summer."

But sprints aren't Harte's only contribution to the club. This month and next, he is sponsoring an informal cross country series with stops at Oregon Ridge, McDonogh School and Herring Run.

"Fewer and fewer people coming out of high school are running," Harte says. "There seems to be fewer people between 20 and 30 who are running compared with 20 years ago. So we're trying to change a few things to get more people involved.

"Everyone comes from track and cross country. People go to road running because there's nowhere else to go. A lot of people get hurt because roads are hard. But tracks are soft and turf is soft."

The remaining events in the cross country series:

* Feb. 26: McDonogh, 5 miles, 10 a.m.

* March 12: Herring Run, 6 miles, 10 a.m.

* March 26: McDonogh, 5 miles, 10 a.m.
