A 30-year-old Severn man was taken to North Arundel Hospital Sunday night after being beaten by at least four men near the 8200 block of Deerfield Circle.
Sherman F. May of Flintlock Court told police he was waiting for a ride in front of the Pioneer Food Market at Reece Road and Pioneer Drive shortly before 6:30 p.m. when two men got out of a blue Datsun, grabbed him and forced him behind the store.
One of the men -- Mr. May said the man was named George or Georgie -- accused him of "saying something about him to someone" and of owing him money. Mr. May denied owing the man any money, at which point the men began to beat and kick Mr. May, police said.
Mr. May was hit in the head with a bottle and a gun was held to his head, police said.
At one point Mr. May heard one of the assailants advise George to "shoot him in the leg," police said. The victim then told police that George asked some other men standing around if "they wanted in on" the beating.
Mr. May told police that his attackers began walking away, but then turned back toward him. Just then a police cruiser came into view and the men scattered.
Mr. May was staggering and had cuts and swelling about his left eye, according to the police officer who found him. Mr. May collapsed but remained conscious, the officer said.
Mr. May told the officer that the men may live on Arwell Court in the Pioneer City section of Severn. Police said the assailants range in age from the late teens to the early 20s.
Little Caesar's shop robbed by gunman
A Little Caesar's Pizza shop in the 1100 block of Route 3 was robbed Sunday night of an unknown amount of cash, police said.
The robbery occurred at 7:24 p.m., police said. Witnesses said a man wearing a bright red ski mask, a dark color jacket, faded blue jeans and black combat boots pointed a silver-plated pistol at store employees and ordered them to open the cash register.
After taking the money, the robber drove away in a blue Chevrolet Camaro. One of the witnesses followed the getaway car but was not able to get a better description, police said.
