Perry Hall athletic director and wrestling coach Al Miller has endured his share of inclement weather in his 27 years as a coach and administrator, but he can't recall a winter sports season with so many cancellations and postponements.
"We're all sitting around in limbo, waiting for something to happen," said Miller. "It hasn't been fun at all. You never know where you're going from here. The only positive thing out of all this is that everyone is in the same boat."
All high school sports events scheduled for yesterday in the Baltimore area were wiped out by the winter storm. Included were many regular-season basketball games plus tournaments in wrestling, track and field and girls basketball.
The Baltimore City District 9 Wrestling Tournament scheduled for yesterday and today at Mervo has been rescheduled for Tuesday at Southwestern.
Walbrook coach Wavie Gibson, District 9 representative for the state committee, said the Mervo gym was unavailable because of "the rescheduling of other athletic events."
The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday and follow a single-elimination format until the quarterfinals. The finals will be conducted that night.
The Carroll County Wrestling Tournament scheduled for today at North Carroll has been postponed until 2 p.m. Feb. 22. The host Panthers have won seven straight county titles and 10 of the past 11.
The Harford County Wrestling Tournament scheduled for this weekend has been postponed until next weekend at Havre de Grace High School.
Friday's quarterfinals will begin at 6 p.m. with the remainder of the program beginning at 2 p.m. the next day.
Aberdeen coach Dick Slutzky, whose Eagles are going for their 10th straight county crown, said the absence of school days has distanced him from his wrestlers, making it difficult to monitor their weights.
"Being out of school, you're not in contact with your kids as much as you would like to be, but I've been talking to them by phone," Slutzky said. "My kids have been making a big effort, going to athletic clubs, running in their basements. But you just never know."
What is known is that the Baltimore County Wrestling Tournament at Dundalk High has been rescheduled for Monday and Tuesday, beginning each day at 3 p.m. The first round and the quarterfinals will be wrestled on Monday, with the semifinals and finals set for Tuesday.
Baltimore County athletics coordinator Ron Belinko said the finals likely would be conducted on three mats simultaneously beginning at about 7:30.
The Howard County Wrestling Tournament scheduled for this weekend has been moved to Thursday and Friday at Atholton High School.
The tournament will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday and 3 p.m. Friday, and each wrestler will be given a 3- pound weight allowance.
The Anne Arundel County Wrestling Tournament has been moved to Monday and Tuesday night at South River High.
Matches are expected to begin at 4 p.m. each day, ending at about "9:30 or 10 p.m. each night," said South River athletic director Jim Haluck.
"We have 27 hours worth of matches, but we'll run four full matches the whole way through," said Haluck, who hopes to start the finals at 7 on Tuesday night. "I think we can do that and be fine."
The snow and ice also forced indoor track officials to juggle regional and state meet schedules.
The Class 1A-2A West Regional meet has been moved to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Fifth Regiment Armory. The Class 4A East Regional championships will be conducted Friday at Essex Community College at an undetermined time. The 1A-2A East Regional meet will take place at 1 p.m. Feb. 21 at the armory.
The Class 3A state meet will go on as scheduled at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Fifth Regiment Armory, but the 4A state meet has been moved to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 24, and the 1A-2A state meet will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 25. All state meets will take place at the armory.
The Association of Independent Schools girls basketball tournament will be conducted Monday, Tuesday and # Wednesday at the same times and sites as originally scheduled.
Wednesday's championship round, which includes the A Division final at 6 p.m. and the B Division championship at 8, will be played at a site to be determined.
