Contractors may start bidding on the Taneytown Elementary School expansion in April and on the Oklahoma Road Middle School shortly after that, school officials say.
The Carroll County Board of Education voted to approve construction documents yesterday for both projects.
The Taneytown Elementary School project will add a gym, cafeteria and classrooms and renovate the existing building. Most of the new construction will be on the north and east side of the school, with a new entrance on the east side.
The Oklahoma Road Middle School will be a new building in Eldersburg to alleviate crowding at Sykesville Middle School.
The estimated $12 million Oklahoma Road project has not gotten state approval, however. The county has appealed to the state Board of Public Works and to area legislators to pay half the cost, but officials don't expect an answer before the end of the legislative session.
The new middle school will use the design of the New Windsor Middle School, now under construction, but with an additional 25,000 square feet, mostly for special education.
Architects have designed the school with special-education rooms among the regular classrooms.
