NEW YORK -- For some New York City residents, Christmas has arrived just in time for Valentine's Day.
Because of a blunder during renovations, about 4,000 parcels received in November and December by the Times Plaza post office in Brooklyn sat undelivered until this week, said Brooklyn Postmaster Robert Daruk. All of the packages, which were addressed to the 11217 ZIP code, should be delivered by today, Mr. Daruk said.
Though the delayed parcels represent a tiny portion of the 4.5 million pieces of mail the post office receives in the borough every day, Mr. Daruk said he realizes that fact might offer slim consolation to little hands awaiting a little something from a distant relative.
"I can't take away the pain," Mr. Daruk said. "All I can do is assure them that we'll do everything we can to make sure it never happens again."
Somehow the packages wound up in an out-of-the-way corner. They were discovered when the Times Plaza crew began moving into newly renovated offices Monday.
