Route 29 head-on crash spares drivers


A Columbia woman was treated at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center yesterday after her car crossed a median strip on Route 29 near Broken Land Parkway and crashed head-on into another vehicle early yesterday morning.

Christine Balunis of the 11200 block of Pear Tree Way was driving her Nissan 240SX north on U.S. 29 when it collided with a southbound Chevrolet Celebrity station wagon at 7:36 a.m. Ms. Balunis was taken by ambulance to the Baltimore trauma center. She was treated and released early yesterday afternoon, county police said.

The driver of the station wagon, Bradley Beyers of the 3600 block of Fords Lane in Baltimore, was treated at Howard County General and released.

Black history gala Saturday at mall

The 13th Annual Black History Celebration, sponsored by the Howard County Coalition for Black History and the Mall in Columbia, will be held from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the mall. Opening ceremonies begin at noon.

The event will highlight the contributions and achievements of historic African-Americans through displays and entertainment.

After opening ceremonies, the event will feature performances by the Morgan State Choir and Morgan State University Jazz Ensemble, followed by the Young Columbians' presentation of a musical history of America.

In the afternoon, the celebration will feature the Greek Step Show and Greek Medley of Songs. The duo Heart to Heart will entertain with a collection of Broadway show music.

There will also be presentations by Great Blacks in Wax Museum and the Maryland Museum of African Art.
