Oakland Mills tuned up for its showdown Saturday against defending county champion Hammond with a 54-18 wrestling win over Atholton yesterday.
Five Scorpions earned pins, including Juri Freeman (112 pounds), Wade Mitchell (130), Matt Sutton (135), Casey Moffett (140) and Paul Crickard (145).
Oakland Mills' strength apparently is in its lower weights because the Scorpions were pinned at 152, 160 and 171.
Freshman Victor Rivera at 160 was a surprise starter in place of a teammate who missed practice. Ricky Trott (20-4) pinned Rivera at the 3:30 mark.
Atholton coach Ron McMillan's strategy for the match never panned out. He bumped up Dave Tangredi from 119 to 125 and inserted Jeff Rowan at 119, hoping to upset Justin Robbins. But Rowan lost, 9-5.
And then Tangredi stretched a muscle in his shoulder in the third period of his bout against Choung Nguyen and lost by default when he was unable to continue. Tangredi was trailing, 4-1.
"If we could have won those two matches I would have bumped up my 152, 160 and 171 and inserted a new 152," McMillan said. "The result would have been a lot closer."
Instead McMillan kept Jeff Rhodes at 152 and Rhodes pinned Josh Crickard, and kept Matt Radik at 171 and Radik pinned Van Dang.
Tony Howard (189) and Glenn Laforce (heavyweight) of Oakland Mills earned forfeit victories.
Oakland Mills' Freeman and Mitchell continued their strong showings this season. Freeman, a senior, is 20-1 and ranked sixth in the state. The two-time county champ has given up only 19 points all season and only seven wrestlers have gone the distance against him. He has 10 pins.
"He has good credentials and has a shot at winning states," Oakland Mills coach Steve Carnahan said. "He's been a hard worker for four years and it is paying off."
Freeman's older brother Kalev was also a county champion. Freeman was 23-9 last season at 103 pounds and finished third in the region.
Mitchell, a junior who is 21-1 this season after putting together a 22-9 mark last year, is the defending county champ at 112, but has wrestled 125 and 130 this season.
He's not ranked because his competition hasn't been as tough as Freeman's. But Mitchell won the Chopticon Tourney and his )) only loss was a 3-2 decision to Keith Woods of Lackey. He has eight pins.
Oakland Mills (9-5, 4-0) and Hammond have unblemished county records heading into Saturday's showdown. Atholton dropped to overall and 1-4 in the league.
