Canisius drops Loyola Bergan reaches 1,000


BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Darrell Barley scored 20 points and Micheal Meeks added 18 to lead Canisius to an 87-72 victory over Loyola in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game yesterday.

Craig Wise contributed 17 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds for Canisius (9-5, 3-2). Binky Johnson scored 15 points.

Tracy Bergan scored 23 points for Loyola (8-5, 2-2). Michael Reese added 21 points and had a game-high 13 rebounds for the Greyhounds. Bergan also became the 24th player in Greyhounds history to score 1,000 career points. He reached the milestone on a layup with 11:39 to go in the second half.

In the first half, Canisius made eight of its first nine field-goal attempts -- four from three-point range -- and led 20-8 with 15:02 remaining. The Greyhounds came back to score 13 straight points, taking a 21-20 lead on a three-pointer by Bergan. Three-pointers by Javone Moore and Chris Young in the final two minutes helped Canisius to a 41-39 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Canisius took a 53-43 lead on a layup by Meeks with 16:44 to go. Loyola reduced the Golden Griffins' lead to 61-59 on a field goal by Reese with 9:49 left. Canisius then went on an 11-3 run to solidify its lead at 72-62.
