Basketball * 12-and-under boys -- Kevin Boone's 10 points led the Freetown Tigers to a 27-11 win over the West Youth Activity Devils in an Hakeem Olajuwon League game last Saturday at Marley Middle School.
Demont Teamer scored nine points for the Tigers and teammates Wade Carter and Daryl Covert added points two
In other Hakeem Olajuwon League action, Tim Russell's Buccaneers split their two games, losing to the Anne Arundel Rebels, 17-10, before defeating the Lake Shore Lakers, 20-13.
Jeremy Robinson tallied a team-high six points in the Bucs' season-opening loss and teammates Jaime Knisely and Ray Caputo rounded out the scoring with three points and one point, respectively. Buccaneers point guard Butch Santucci was cited for his excellent ball-handling skills.
The Buccaneers, who trailed Lake Shore 9-7 at the half, rallied in the second half behind Robinson's game-high 12 points. Also playing well for the victors were Knisely, Tony Bois, John Burkhalter and Matt Wanner.
* 10-and-under boys -- Jay Vargo's Crofton Red team dropped its season opener last weekend to PAL, 26-14.
Nick Viola led Crofton with eight points and nine rebounds, followed by Chris Sparks with four points and one rebound and Alex Vargo with two points, two assists and one steal.
Crofton was nipped by Shadyside, 14-12, in its second Michael Adams League game.
Viola and Michael Zurfluh scored three points each for Crofton, and Sparks, David Erculiani, and Michael Larue chipped in with two points apiece.
* 8-10 boys -- Last week, players from the 24-member Severna Park Green Hornets boys basketball team brought their record to 26-1 as they won two county games Saturday at Crofton Middle School and their fourth and fifth tournament championships at the Langley Park Girls & Boys Club Tournament in Virginia.
In the first of the two games at Crofton, Severna Park defeated Harundale, 27-18, as Deon Gough had 14 points and Jon Garritt and David Williams netted eight and seven points, respectively. Williams led the rebounding effort with nine and Garritt pulled down five.
Nick Richards added three points for Severna Park and Todd MacMullen and Matt Latonic had two each.
In the second game, the Green Hornets defeated Crofton, 24-11, as Bobby West had five points and Michael Floyd and Travis Jones added four apiece.
Tysheen Jones, Trevor Quinn, Lionel Jennings, Ryan Sullivan and Kevin Camponeschi scored two points each and Jon Taylor scored one.
At Langley Park, Severna Park's 9- and 10-year-olds defeated Kettering, 26-23, in overtime on Friday evening for their fourth tournament championship.
Tysheen Jones led the Hornets with 15 points, including two baskets and nine free throws in the second half. MacMullen had six points and a team-high 20 rebounds and Travis Jones and Camponeschi added three points and one, respectively.
On Saturday at Langley Park, Severna Park's 10-year-olds defeated Landover Hills, 33-21, giving the Hornets their fifth tournament title.
David Williams led the scoring with 17 points and Gough chipped in with eight. Bobby West had four points for the victors and Gavin Floyd and Jon Garritt scored two each.
Youth wrestling The Raiders junior wrestling team participated in the ninth annual Laurel Delaware Tournament last weekend and eight of the 11 locals who attended placed.
Jonathan Davis (70-pound Bantam Division), Joe Fold (80-pound Midget Division), Richie McCombs (98-pound Junior Division) and Dean Laumann (158-pound Intermediate Division) all captured first place for the Raiders and pinned their opponents in the finals.
Eric Dawson was runner-up in the 65-pound Bantam Division. Finishing third in the Junior Division were Spike Stinchcomb (75) and Derrick Dawson (115).
Rounding out the medal winners for the Raiders was Jimmy Spath, who took fourth in the 60-pound Bantam Division.
The Raiders' A and B teams will participate in the Aberdeen
Invitational Saturday at Aberdeen High School.
The Arden Recreation Council's Attackers Wrestling Club also attended last weekend's tournament in Laurel, Del.
Twelve wrestlers from the Attackers Beltway League squad participated in the tournament, which was conducted by the Laurel Bulldogs Wrestling Club, and the Attackers won 20 of their 26 matches.
Ten Attackers brought home trophies, including six for first place, one for second and three for third.
Claiming first place for Arden were Aaron Herwig (75 pounds), Ryan Herwig (70), Matt Pandullo (80), Carl Cicchetti (112), Jason Heffernan (105) and Ron Cooper (140). Heffernan received a plaque for the fastest pin, which came in 10 seconds into his Junior Age Division match.
Tim Bohlman was Arden's lone runner-up as he took second among the 55-pounders. Taking third for the Attackers were Tony Cooksey (85), Jim Foster (98) and Ray Sadaka (heavyweight).
Mark Sadaka and Eric Hill wrestled well but were eliminated in the preliminaries.
The Attackers opened their Capitol Area Wrestling League season with two victories during a tri-meet last Sunday at Parkville Middle School in Manassas, Va.
Arden defeated Bull Run, 65-30, before turning away the Centreville (Va.) Wildcats, 81-18.
Mark Sadaka (65) pinned Bull Run's Jimmy Donovan in 2:40 and teammate Ryan Herwig (70) followed that with a 19-second pin of Josh Wilkinson. Pandullo (80) pinned his man in 28 seconds and Heffernan (105) needed only 25 seconds to pin Bull Run's Kellan Seaman.
Cicchetti won his 110-pound bout with a 59-second pin of Weeley Hawkins.
Arden's Bryan Hayne defeated Warren Borne, 7-4, in the 115-pound weight class and Eric Hill defeated Dustin Graham, 6-0, to win the 85-pound bout.
In the 85-pound weight class, Cooksey recorded a technical fall over Greg O'Connor with a score of 15-0.
Recording pins for Arden in its win over Centreville were Hill, Combs, Cooksey, Emerson, Foster, Heffernan, Cicchetti, Cooper, Herwig and Mark Sadaka.
Bohlman registered a technical fall over Centreville's Chris Goldhorn and Hayne defeated Ricky Krebs, 7-0.
Pandullo defeated Tyler Anderson and Heffernan defeated Mike Puglio in exhibition matches.
