Ferrari -- Formula One team, winless since 1990, signed former Honda engineer Osamu Goto to head its engines division.


Boston Red Sox -- Named John Buckley executive VP for administration.

Florida Marlins -- Agreed to terms with P Mark Gardner and P Willie Fraser on minor-league contracts.


NBA -- Fined six players for taking part in a fight Wednesday night: Los Angeles Lakers' Doug Christie, $3,500 for initiating the fight by pushing the Seattle SuperSonics' Ricky Pierce; Pierce, $2,500 for retaliating; the Lakers' Anthony Peeler, $2,500 for adding to the incident by grabbing Pierce and pushing him; Lakers' James Worthy, SuperSonics' Sam Perkins and Vincent Askew, $2,500 each for leaving the bench area. Christie, Pierce and Peeler were ejected from the game, which carries an additional automatic $250 fine.

NBA -- Named the Utah Jazz's Jerry Sloan and Phoenix Suns C Oliver Miller Coach of the Month and Player of the, respectively.

Orlando Magic -- Placed G Todd Lichti on the injured list. Activated F-C Keith Tower from the injured list.


ACC -- Named Georgia Tech men's basketball G Travis Best Player of the Week and Maryland C Joe Smith ACC and ECAC Rookie of the Week. Named Duke women's basketball F Carey Kauffman Player of the Week and North Carolina G Marion Jones Rookie of the Week.

Bethune-Cookman -- Named assistant AD Jack "Cy" McClairen football coach. He was 61-37-3 as coach from 1961 to 1973.

Florida State -- Released TB Marquette Smith (62 carries for 297 yards) from his football scholarship for personal reasons; he will transfer to Central Florida. FB William Floyd announced he will forgo his senior year of eligibility and enter the NFL draft.

Fordham -- Named Nick Quartaro football coach.

Kentucky Wesleyan -- Promoted John Johnson to football coach.

North Carolina -- Named Cary Godette outside linebackers coach.

Ohio State -- Extended the contract of Nancy Darsch, women's basketball coach, through the 1997-98 season. Released freshman RB Travis McGuire from his football letter of intent.

Syracuse -- Named Norm Gerber defensive coordinator.

Texas A&M; -- Fired offensive coordinator Bob Toledo.

Washington -- RB Napoleon Kaufman, 440 yards from becoming the greatest runner in the Huskies history, announced he is staying for his senior season.


Phoenix Cardinals -- Fired pro personnel director Erik Widmark and scout Carl Hairston.

San Diego Chargers -- Announced that defensive line coach George O'Leary resigned to accept a position as defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Georgia Tech.


NHL -- Named Detroit Red Wings C Sergei Fedorov and Buffalo Sabres G Dominik Hasek co-winners of the Player of the Month. Named Los Angeles Kings C Wayne Gretzky Player of the Week. Added Detroit Red Wings D Mark Howe and Los Angeles Kings F Dave Taylor to the All-Star Game rosters to recognize their career-long contributions.

Ottawa Senators -- Recalled D Kent Paynter from AHL Prince Edward Island.

Pittsburgh Penguins -- Recalled RW Justin Duberman from IHL Cleveland.

Washington Capitals -- Recalled C Steve Konowalchuk from AHL Portland. Assigned D Shawn Anderson to Portland.


Thunder -- Activated assistant coach-forward John Tucker. Released F Adam Wright.
