A distraught boyfriend apparently killed the 19-year-old woman he was dating inside her home in Severn yesterday, then shot and critically wounded another teen-ager before fleeing, Anne Arundel County police said.
The suspect, described as in his early 20s, was being questioned by homicide detectives last night in the Western District station in Odenton. No charges had been filed.
Police had few details of Anne Arundel's 18th homicide of 1993, one shy of the record 19 set in 1989. They could not say what the apparent argument was about and said a search of the home and suspect's car turned up no weapon.
Authorities were called to the two-story house on a cul-de-sac in the 1900 block of Bastille Court at 1:37 p.m. by a neighbor who found the body of Betina Krista Gentry, who lived in the house.
Police were not sure what time the shooting occurred, but a spokesman said it most likely happened late yesterday morning or early afternoon.
Police found the body in the first-floor living room. The other victim, described by police as a friend of Ms. Gentry's, was found inside a bathroom next to the two-story garage. Police did not describe her wounds, nor did they say what type of gun was used.
The name of the wounded woman was not released pending notification of her relatives. Officer Terry Crowe, a police spokesman, said she was in critical condition last night at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Relatives and friends who gathered in front of the slain woman's house yesterday would not talk to reporters. Some broke down in tears.
Officer Crowe said the suspect was inside the home with the two women when he allegedly opened fire during an argument.
While police were at the house, a neighbor told them a black Jeep Cherokee with Florida license plates had been parked out front all morning.
Police broadcast a lookout for the vehicle, which returned to the scene about 2:30 p.m., about 45 minutes after police arrived. A county officer quickly pulled the vehicle over.
Several other officers ran up to the car and arrested the suspect.
The spokesman said a male passenger and a 2-year-old boy who also were in the Jeep were not arrested.
