Mount Airy man is charged with raping 12-year-old girl


A Carroll grand jury has indicted a 21-year-old Mount Airy man on charges that he raped a 12-year-old girl between May and Nov. 4, Circuit Court records show.

Michael Shawn Wyatt of the 5500 block of Cindy Court was released yesterday after posting $5,000 bond. Circuit Judge Francis M. Arnold ordered him not to have contact with the girl or her family.

Mr. Wyatt is charged with second-degree rape, three counts of second-degree sexual offense, two counts of unnatural and perverted sexual practice, sodomy, a third-degree sexual offense and a fourth-degree sexual offense.

Mount Airy Flood Relief raises $42,000 in aid

The Mount Airy Flood Relief has collected $42,147 to date and helped 247 families in Alexandria, Mo.

Mike Colgan, owner of Safari's Restaurant in Mount Airy, had his hair cut by Mayor Jerry Johnson on Dec. 22 to raise money for the fund. Residents contributed $1,100 to get Mr. Colgan to allow Mayor Johnson to trim his locks.

A dance to benefit the Flood Relief Fund is planned for 9 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Mount Airy Legion Post 191, 801 Prospect Road, Mount Airy. Allen Brown and the Wishing Wells will perform.

Tickets are $10 each and are for sale at Ben Gue Antiques and the Olde Town Restaurant.

Winecellars to warm up cold January days

Linganore Winecellars, 13601 Glissans Mill Road in Mount Airy, will have Pretty Winter Days Wine and Cheese Tasting 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. during January.

Hot spicy wines, nouveau red and nouvelle white will be available. Participants can watch a video of wine master Anthony Snow on the making of wines.
