Bumbry joins Baysox staff

The Bowie Baysox announced yesterday that former Orioles outfielder Al Bumbry will join manager Pete Mackanin's coaching staff for the 1994 season.

Bumbry, who recently was released from the major-league coaching staff of the Boston Red Sox, was considered a candidate for the Orioles major-league staff, but that opening went to Don Buford.

The Orioles might have chosen Bumbry if first-base coach Davey Lopes had left for a managerial position, but apparently felt there would be some redundancy with both Lopes and Bumbry on the staff.

The promotion of Buford, who managed Bowie last year, apparently will create a chain reaction in the minor-league system. The Orioles have moved Mackanin from Single-A Frederick to Double-A Bowie and are expected to appoint Mike O'Berry as the new manager of the Keys next week. O'Berry managed the club's Single-A franchise in Albany, Ga., last year.
