Four Jan. 1 races offer a healthy start to 1994

It's a way for runners to get the year off on the right foot.

The Renaissance AllSports Athletic Club and the Westminster Road Runners Club have been ushering in the new year for several seasons with their St. Mary's 6-Miler and Winfield Mile, respectively. And because New Year's Day falls on a Saturday this year, the Baltimore Road Runners Club will hold its Father Time Frolic 8-Miler on New Year's morning.

In addition, the Howard County Striders will hold their Prediction Run 5-miler Saturday at the Locust Park Neighborhood Center.

Although all four trail the New York Road Runners Club's Midnight Run through Central Park by several hours, they are an ideal way to begin the new year in a healthy and wholesome fashion.

Says BRRC president Jeff Sanborn: "It's a novelty race, without a clock. You can't time yourself. And we thought we would try it on New Year's Day. Why not try something a little different? My role these last two years has been to make some changes -- not for change's sake but to see if it works. If if does, we'll give it a go."

In its New Year's slot, the Winfield Mile has been working well for the WRRC.

Says the club's Dave Herlocker: "We used to hold the Frostbite races the first Sunday of January. We put the Winfield Mile on New Year's Day and then went over to someone's house and put [registration] packets together and all watched football."

With the demise of the Frostbite 5K and 15K in 1989, the club switched the date for the Winfield Mile.

"After we discontinued the Frostbite, we put the Winfield Mile on the last Sunday of December and didn't draw that well," says Herlocker. "So we thought, 'What the heck, we'll put it back on New Year's.' "

Cherry Blossom update

The bad news is that the Northern Telecom Cherry Blossom is no longer free, but the good news is that the field has been expanded to 5,800 and the lottery to gain entry has been eliminated.

T-shirts will be included with a $14 entry fee (until March 1) for the 10-mile race April 10 in Washington. The Children's Hospital General Pediatric Ambulatory Center will receive $7 of every entry fee, up to $25,000.

To receive an entry form, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Northern Telecom Cherry Blossom, P.O. Box 884, Middletown, Md. 21769. For information, call (301) 371-5583.

New York City Marathon

Requests for applications to the 25th New York City Marathon, to be run Nov. 6, should be sent after Jan. 1 to: Marathon Entries, P.O. Box 1388 GPO, New York, N.Y. 10116.

Enclose a self-addressed, No. 10 business envelope and a check, money order or credit card charge for $6. Make checks payable to the New York Road Runners Club.

Entrants will be accepted on the following basis: 12,000 on a first-come basis, 5,000 to be determined in a July lottery and 8,000 for international entries.

For further information, call (212) 860-4455.
