A night of dueling Daves and Bobs

You have to know where to look to get solid entertainment value out of tonight's TV lineup, but it's there. Here are some good places to start:

* "Monday Night Football" (9 p.m.-conclusion, WJZ, Channel 13) -- The last time the Miami Dolphins were on "Monday Night Football," and that was earlier this month, the boys in the booth were all charged up about having an exciting game down to the wire. The Dolphins lost that game and every game since, and now have to fight to remain in the playoffs. And talk about being charged up: Tonight's opponents, who have the home field advantage, are the San Diego Chargers. ABC.

* "Bob" (9:30-10 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- Bob Newhart, moved again, comes to his old Monday night home, and time slot, for a special test run and a first-run episode. Joyce Van Patten is the guest star, and this would be a good time to acquaint yourself with Newhart's new show. Ironically, look what it's directly competing against on Nickelodeon: Newhart's old show, "The Bob Newhart Show."

* "Mr. Bean" (7:30-8 p.m., HBO) -- I hope you've "Bean" watching these mostly wordless comedy shows, because Rowan Atkinson, as Mr. Bean, is an absolute delight.

* "Larry King Live" (9-10 p.m., CNN) -- This could be one for King's "best of" vault. Tonight's scheduled guest: Michael Jordan.

* "Late Night With David Letterman" (10-11 p.m., E!) -- No, this isn't "Late Show," or CBS, or a typo. Back when Letterman was with NBC, the network sold rerun rights to his old "Late Night" shows to the Arts & Entertainment Network, which began broadcasting them until Letterman expressed his displeasure. Since he was still renegotiating with NBC then, the network pulled the plug on the rerun idea, but now that he's at CBS, overexposing Letterman is a calculated tactic. So, beginning tonight, old Letterman shows are presented weeknights on E! Entertainment Television -- in prime time. Letterman, no doubt, could compile a Top Ten list of reasons why he's against the extra exposure, but for fans, the more, the merrier.
