Costantini, Kennedy to get Howie Awards


The Howard County Arts Council will present the 1993 Howie Awards at the Seventh Annual Business and the Arts Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 21 at the Columbia Inn.

The Outstanding Artist Award will be given to Ellen Kennedy, one of the founders of the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society (HoCoPoLitSo). The Outstanding Arts Educator Award will be given to Valerie Costantini, chairwoman of the Performing Arts Division of Howard Community College. The Outstanding Business Supporter of the Arts Award will be given to the Baltimore Gas & Electric Company.

The luncheon's featured speaker will be Marcellus W. Alexander Jr., vice president and general manager of WJZ-TV, who will also present the awards.

The Howie awards were instituted by the Howard County Arts Council to recognize long-term contributions to the arts in Howard County. Nominations are solicited from business, arts and education leaders and the community. Final awards are determined by the Arts Council committee.

The luncheon will also feature a performance by dance and theater artist Shizumi. A native of Japan, Shizumi has studied classical dance and theater in her native country and in the United States. She has performed on television and the stage the Kennedy Center in Washington.

There will also be a visual arts exhibit by county public school students.

* Harpers Choice : 5500 Cedars Lane: Computer games and a purse were stolen between Thursday, and Friday. There were no signs of forced entry.

5600 Harpers Farm Road: A TV, VCR, and radio were stolen Friday, after someone lifted a sliding glass door out of its track.

* Town Center : 10300 block of Hickory Ridge Road: Toys, clothing, a camera, camcorder, TV, and other miscellaneous items were stolen when someone pried open a storage shed between Saturday and Sunday.

* Wilde Lake : 5900 block of Turnabout Lane: Someone stole a four-door 1990 Buick Century between Thursday and Friday.
