Man, 49, pleads guilty to negligent boating

An Edgewood man pleaded guilty in District Court in Bel Air Wednesday to charges of negligently operating his 22-foot cabin cruiser during a Sept. 5 incident near Pond Point on the Bush River that demolished a 20-foot craft and injured two women in the other boat.

Coy Edward Barker, 49, was fined $500, but that was reduced to $100 and he was ordered to pay $20 in court costs and successfully complete a Maryland safe boating course. Barker also must serve two years of unsupervised probation.

Maryland Natural Resources Police said Victoria Lynn Miller, 38, of Street, a passenger in a 1978 Cresswell operated by Arthur Lee Rains, 35, of Fallston was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment.

Donna Lynne Jones, 32, of Forest Hill was treated at Harford Memorial Hospital and released, police said.

When Barker was arrested, police said alcohol was not a factor, but that his cabin cruiser was traveling about 30 knots, or 34 1/2 mph at the time of the collision.

They also charged him with not properly maintaining a forward lookout, a charge that later was dropped.
