McDonogh's Chase does it all in 57-46 triumph against IND

Sonia Chase did not even wait for the opening tip to score.

A technical foul before the game let Chase hit a free throw, and the Maryland-bound senior went on to collect 37 points, 18 rebounds, eight steals and seven assists as No. 19 McDonogh defeated host and No. 16 IND, 57-46, yesterday.

Chase, who topped the 1,000-point barrier during last Friday's loss to University City (Pa.), increased her career total to 1,042. The senior controlled play for McDonogh (3-2) all over the court.

"I just wanted to play real hard and win the game," said Chase. "I felt good in warm-ups. Everything just clicked."

And it clicked from the start. After IND (2-3) was hit with a technical for making a starting lineup change after the officials had checked the lineup, Chase hit one of two free throws for a 1-0 lead before the clock started. Chase then made her first two shots as McDonogh took a 7-0 lead just 1:47 into the game.

IND rallied and led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. The score was tied at 14 midway through the second quarter when Chase took control.

McDonogh switched to a full-court press, and Chase made four steals and scored 13 points in the final 3:34. She swiped two inbounds passes in a row at one point, sparking the Eagles on a 23-6 run.

Chase scored 23 of 29 McDonogh points during one stretch as the Eagles increased their lead to 16 early in the fourth quarter. IND rallied, however, as Shannon Skopp (14 points) scored four on a 12-1 run that cut the McDonogh lead to 45-40 with 4:01 left.

Once again, Chase came through. She scored eight points, including four on clutch free throws, as the Eagles pulled away.

"There's no doubt we run our offense to get the ball to her," said McDonogh coach Seth Kushkin. "From top to bottom statistically, it was an unbelievable performance."

Laurie Schwoy scored seven for the Eagles, Lindsay Mortimer six, Sarah Manekin five and Alaina Lawson two. McDonogh also was 21 of 33 from the free-throw line, including 11 of 14 in the fourth quarter to blunt the IND rally.
