Commissioners OK buying land to expand school

Carroll commissioners voted yesterday to buy almost three-quarters of an acre for $51,500 from a Taneytown doctor for the expansion of Taneytown Elementary School.

The seven-tenths of an acre on Kings Drive belongs to William R. and Loretta L. Linthicum.

The county needs the land to move the bus loading area at the school off Trevanion Road onto Kings Drive, said Vernon Smith, director of school support services for the Board of Education.

The school system plans to renovate and enlarge the school and work should begin next summer, he said.

The Linthicum land had belonged to the Board of Education, but was given to the doctor in the early 1980s as an enticement for him to open an office in Taneytown, Mr. Smith said.

The city did not have a doctor at the time.
