The body of an unidentified man was found in woods off Benfield Road near Jumpers Hole Road on Monday night.
Police said some children playing in the area behind the Benfield Village Shopping Center found the body. A parent called police at 9:37 p.m.
The badly decomposed body was lying on a hillside. Police estimate that the man had been dead at least two weeks.
The children first noticed the body two weeks ago, but did not think it was real.
"They saw just the legs and they thought it was some type of leftover Halloween prank," said Lt. Mike McNelly, commander of the Crimes Against Persons Section. "Finally, one of the children convinced his father to come look at it and he called police."
The man was dressed and did not have any identification on him. There were no obvious signs of foul play, the lieutenant said.
The man's cause of death could not be determined. Investigators sent the body to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
