2 young musicians to perform Friday at senior center open house


The O'Malley Senior Center, 1275 Odenton Road, invites all senior citizens, their families and friends to attend an open house and holiday concert at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

The concert will feature an encore by two gifted young musicians, Hsui-Hui Wang and his sister, Sheng-Tsung, who graced the center with a performance in the fall. By popular request, they will entertain guests with the sound of holiday music reflecting the beauty, serenity and joy of the season.

Ms. Wang has won numerous competitions and awards, including the Emerson String Quartet Competition, the Renee B. Fisher Award for outstanding Achievement in Music and the Hartford Symphony Auxiliary's Young Artist Competition. She participated in the Aspen Music Festival as a scholarship student and attended the Waterloo Music Festival at Princeton University on a full fellowship.

Ms. Wang is pursuing a doctoral degree in performance at the University of Maryland at College Parkunder the instruction of Thomas Schumacher.

Mr. Wang performed the Bruch Violin Concerto in Germany in 1988 with the Bremen Symphony Orchestra. In addition to serving as concertmaster for All-State Junior and Senior Orchestras and Honor Orchestras, Mr. Wang received the 1992 Maryland Distinguished Scholar Award in the talent category. He is pursuing his bachelor of violin performance degree at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.

Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church, on Murray Road in Odenton, is again presenting a live nativity on the front lawn of the church. Many volunteers will be needed to make this a meaningful worship experience. Watch for a sign-up sheet.

Five presentations of the live nativity are scheduled. Each presentation will need: Mary and Joseph (adults), three kings and various shepherds and angels. Costumes are provided, as well as technical advice.

The nativity be seen at 7 p.m. on Sunday , with caroling at the nativity scene and refreshments in the social hall; 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23 and 5 p.m. 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Christmas Eve, preceding each worship service.

Cub Scout Pack 269, sponsored by the Four Seasons Women's Club, met recently at Four Seasons Elementary School. Cubmaster Mark Hagensick awarded the Bobcat badge to Jeremy Weiland and Jay Ebenal. The Bear badge was presented to Craig Maley. Webelos activity badges were presented as follows: Brett Bosher, Brad Hurst, Michael Innes, Bart Maxwell, Matt Seaton and Marty Shatzer: Scientist; Hurst and Shatzer: Athlete; Sean Linton and Mark Tyler: Readyman; Tyler: Forester, Naturalist and Outdoorsman; Tim Anderson, Billy Bergbauer, Will Brady, Matt Hagensick, Brandon Rieger and Eddie Christenson: Showman; Bosher: Artist, Family Member, Handyman, Scholar and Traveler.

Bosher and Tyler earned a Compass Point device. Maxwell received the Compass Point emblem. Sports awards were presented as follows: Bosher, Hurst and Shatzer: Physical Fitness pin; Jeffrey Anderson, Kyle Allen, Aaron Edings, Edward Cordova, Adam Cage, Reginald Parker, Matthew Michels, Nathaniel White, Christopher Mayo and Jeremy Weiland: Soccer belt loop and pin; Shatzer: Bicycle belt loop.
