Jockeys Inocencio Ayarza and Michael Roll were injured yesterday during a double spill after the running of the fifth race at Laurel Race Course.
Ayarza was transported by MedEvac helicopter to University Hospital in Baltimore and was diagnosed as having a contusion of the chest wall. He was listed in stable condition, but, said a hospital spokesman, was "experiencing a lot of pain and discomfort."
None of the tests administered to him revealed a fracture.
Roll was taken to Greater Laurel-Beltsville Hospital, where he was diagnosed with an apparent fractured left ankle.
Ayarza's mount, Tackroom Time, stumbled and fell after crossing the finish line and threw him to the track.
Roll, aboard Misty Sauce following Ayarza's horse, leaped off his mount to avoid additional trouble and the landing apparently caused his injury.
The two horses were unharmed, with Tackroom Time rising immediately after the fall.
