Name: Earle Elmer of Kings Contrivance in Columbia.
Hobbies and other activities: Mr. Elmer delivers meals in the Meals on Wheels program in Howard County. He has six to seven routes he drives, sometimes weekly or on alternate weeks. He also volunteers for Chesapeake Habitat helping to build homes in Baltimore. In his spare time, he takes his two grandchildren places.
Organization's comments: Mr. Elmer has been with Meals on Wheels since Feb. 24, 1992.
"Earle has caught on to the Meals on Wheels spirit quickly, in his 22 months of service," said Jeanette Lazarofsky, program administrator for Meals on Wheels in Howard County. "In 1992, he recorded 1,286 miles and 78 hours on alternate-week delivery schedules. Earle's generous contribution of spirit, energy and commitment are demonstrated by his learning and being able to drive many different routes."
Mr. Elmer was nominated this year for the Ernest McCollum Award, the Meals on Wheels volunteer of the year award.
Volunteer's comments: "I did it [volunteered with Meals on Wheels] in Kansas City and I was looking for something to do when I moved here," Mr. Elmer said. "I am also a handyman, and I do that sometimes for people and volunteering at Habitat."
About Mr. Elmer: He retired from the Bendix Corp. in 1978. An electronic engineer, Mr. Elmer worked in the Baltimore Bendix office and was transferred to Kansas City, Mo.
He was married to his wife, Florence, for 47 years. When she passed away, Mr. Elmer moved to Howard County in 1991 from Kansas City to be closer to his son, Charles; daughter-in-law, Beverly; and his two grandchildren, Charles Jr. and Ashley; all of Elkridge.
