Indictment returned in tractor theft case

A county grand jury has returned a nine-count indictment against a 54-year-old Manchester man who was arrested in Westminster on Nov. 16 and charged with stealing lawn and garden tractors and several over-the-road utility trailers.

The indictment charges Buck Alvar Rhett Harris with stealing the equipment, removing the identification numbers and attempting to sell the stolen equipment. He was released on his own recognizance by a court commissioner Nov. 16.

The charges in the indictment are identical to the charges filed in District Court at the time of Mr. Harris' arrest. The grand jury action simply moves the case to Carroll Circuit Court.

The equipment recovered from Mr. Harris, valued at $23,000, was stolen in Maryland and Pennsylvania, officials said.

The Maryland Vehicle Theft Task Force, which investigated the case, is composed of law enforcement officers from Baltimore, Anne Arundel County, the FBI and state police.

An initial appearance has been set for Jan. 11 in Circuit Court.
