Last week: The Redskins lost to the Los Angeles Rams, 10-6. The Eagles lost to the New York Giants, 7-3.
Last meeting: The Eagles beat the Redskins, 34-31, on Randall Cunningham's 10-yard pass to Calvin Williams with four seconds left in the game. Cunningham, who's now out with a broken leg, completed 25 passes for 360 yards.
The series: The Redskins have a 66-45-5 edge in regular-season games in a rivalry that dates to 1934, when the Redskins were in Boston. The teams have met once in the playoffs, and the Redskins won that one in 1990. The Eagles have won the past two meetings and three of the past four, but the Redskins have won 11 of the past 16.
On the sidelines: Richie Petitbon, in his first season, is 2-8. Rich Kotite of the Eagles, in his third season, is 26-18.
What the Redskins have to do to win: Get a big game from quarterback Rich Gannon. He was supposed to add a scrambling dimension to the Redskins' offense, but he was rusty and limited by his ailing foot and ran only three times last week. The Redskins hope he'll be better this week. After scoring just two field goals for two consecutive games, the Redskins need bTC consistent quarterbacking to combine with the running of Reggie Brooks. It also would help Gannon to get more protection than last week, when the Redskins' makeshift offensive line broke down.
What the Eagles have to do to win: Get a big game from quarterback Bubby Brister. Brister started the first two games after Cunningham was injured before going out with a sprained ankle. Ken O'Brien came in and lasted until the final series of the first half last week against the Giants. Brister came back in because O'Brien was ineffective and bothered by a sprained thumb. Brister also was ineffective, but he's getting the call. He needs to put some punch in the offense if the Eagles are to break their six-game losing streak.
Injury report: Eagles: QB Randall Cunningham (leg), LB Byron Evans (arm), DE Tim Harris (elbow) are out. G Mike Schad (knee), T Broderick Thompson (calf) are doubtful. S Wes Hopkins (finger), LB Seth Joyner (ankle), LB Derrick Oden (hamstring), CB Ben Smith (back) are questionable. RB Heath Sherman (finger) is probable. Redskins: DE Shane Collins (foot), DT Bobby Wilson (knee) are out. DT Jason Buck (shoulder), DT Jim Wahler (foot) are doubtful. LB Kurt Gouveia (shoulder) is questionable. LB Monte Coleman (hamstring), S Pat Eilers (shoulder), T Moe Elewonibi (knee), CB Darrell Green (thigh), T Ed Simmons (knee) are probable.
Outlook: The big question is whether either team will score a touchdown. Neither did last week. Look for a low-scoring battle of sputtering offenses. It's hard to believe these teams played an exciting 34-31 game in September.
