Carroll commissioners have hired two auditors to scrutinize the operations of county departments.
The Office of Performance Auditing now has four employees, office administrator Timothy D. Hartman said.
Both positions, which were filled this fall, had been vacant for about two years because of a county hiring freeze, he said.
The commissioners decided to lift the freeze so the auditors could be hired "to ease pressure on the existing staff," said Commissioner Elmer C. Lippy.
The county audits itself continually, Mr. Lippy said.
Robert Miles of Eldersburg began work in late August; Larry Wiskeman of Westminster started in early September.
Both earn $26,500 a year, according to the county personnel office.
County policy required an audit of each department every three years, Mr. Hartman said. Because the auditing office lacked sufficient personnel, he changed the schedule to once every five years.
Mr. Hartman said he will re-evaluate the schedule when the auditors finish current projects.
In addition to routine audits, the office performs audits requested by the commissioners, Mr. Hartman said. The office currently is auditing the county's drug task force.
An outside auditing firm also undertakes financial audits of county books, he said.
