Former ballplayer to speak


One of the women who served as the inspiration for the film "A League of Their Own" will be the featured speaker at a Dec. 7 breakfast sponsored by the Greater Severna Park Chamber of Commerce.

The breakfast is set for 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Severna Park Library on McKinsey Road.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Florence Blanck of the Severna Park Chiropractic Center, who played in the All American Girls Baseball League, which was featured in the movie. The league was formed during World War II, when many major league baseball players were in the armed forces.

The cost is $7 for members and $8 for nonmembers. Reservations are due by Wednesday.

'Marriage of Figaro' to be performed

The Anne Arundel Community Concert Association will present Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Severna Park High School.

The performers will present the comic lyric opera in modern dress and using an idiomatic English translation. Admission is by season subscription.

UPS honors driver for safety record

United Parcel Service in Laurel has honored employee Jim Anderson, a tractor-trailer driver, for completing 20 years without a traffic accident.

The Severna Park resident works in Burtonsville. He and his wife, Marie, have two sons.


* Millersville: Between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, robbers cut the padlock off a cargo truck owned by Medic-Aire Inc. in the 8200 block of Cloverleaf Drive and stole oxygen equipment and tools worth $2,086.

* Millersville: Thieves stole 20 bundles of roofing shingles worth $500 from a garage in the 1100 block of Dicus Mill Road between Nov. 14 and Saturday.

* Millersville: A citizens band radio, a calculator, a pair of binoculars, four fishing rods and fishing lures were stolen from a truck in the 8100 block of Weyburn Road between Sunday and Monday morning.
