Mark Falcone, chief executive officer of English American Tailoring, which manufactures men's clothing in Westminster, contributed a corporate gift of $10,000 to Carroll County General Hospital to be used toward the purchase of a fetal monitor and birthing bed for the hospital's maternity unit.
Mr. Falcone said that the contribution was based on the needs of his 360 employees as well as the community at large.
Cindy Roop, nurse manager of the maternity unit, said the new fetal monitor and birthing bed give the hospital the ability to care for more women.
Fetal monitors track a baby's heart rate during labor, and are important in checking for a fetus's activity before birth, confirming the due date and monitoring the heart rate to determine the baby's overall health prior to delivery.
Birthing beds are engineered to allow for the mother's comfort during labor, as well as aiding the safe delivery of babies.
The number of births at the hospital increased 20 percent last year.
