Church members to plant trees at intersection

Volunteer members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation will plant 40 to 50 new trees at the intersection of Route 29 and Broken Land Parkway on Saturday as part of the Treemendous Maryland Adopt-a-Landscape/Adopt-a-Highway program.

The congregation adopted 5 acres of land at the intersection as part of a local program to reforest the interchange. The community-based effort is under the aegis of the State Highway Administration and is a continuation of the model project organized by Del. Virginia M. Thomas last fall.

The trees -- crab apple, maple, oak, pine and Black Locust -- are provided by the State Highway Administration. Lily bulbs and miscellaneous perennials and shrubs donated by Metzler's Nursery in Columbia will also be planted by the congregation. Boy Scout Troop 613 will assist.

The congregation plans to provide maintenance sessions annually, with additional plantings as needed.
