Man injured as car strikes utility pole

A man was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after the car he was driving hit a utility pole on Route 97 just south of the Carroll-Howard line about 3 p.m. yesterday.

The accident halted traffic on busy Route 97 until 4:30 p.m. while Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. workers repaired wires, a Howard County police spokeswoman said.

Traffic was blocked at Interstate 70, about two miles south of the accident scene, and detoured to Route 32 to the east or Route 27 to the west.

The name of the injured man and his condition were not available yesterday evening.
