25 Years Ago (Week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 1968):

* Site plans were unveiled for General Electric's $300 million appliance park in Columbia. It was expected that the Columbia plant would see a 50 percent increase in production within five years, and a 100 percent increase by 1980, when employment at the plant was expected to reach 12,000.

* A Howard County home known as Maplewood, built by the Murray family in the 1860s, was destroyed by the State Roads Commission. The Lawyers Hill Road property had been formerly part of the Rockburn estate and, earlier, part of Belmont. 50 Years Ago (Week of Oct. 31-Nov. 6, 1943):

* It was announced this week that Howard County farmers could obtain loans in amounts up to $400 from the Emergency Crop and Feed Loan Office of the Farm Credit Administration in Baltimore.
