A 41-year-old Westminster man trying to cross Route 140 near Gorsuch Road during the evening rush hour yesterday was killed when he collided with a pickup.
John Fisher, whose last known address was in the 100 block of S. Center St., was pronounced dead shortly after being flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
L State police said Mr. Fisher sustained severe head injuries.
The 1993 Toyota pickup that collided with the victim was driven by a 32-year-old Hampstead man, who was shaken, but not seriously injured.
Trooper Gary Lang of the state police said the accident occurred at 5:41 p.m., when Mr. Fisher tried to cross the westbound lanes of Route 140 from the median. He crossed two lanes before being struck by the pickup.
The driver "didn't see the guy until the guy came up over his hood," Trooper Lang said.
Mr. Fisher was taken by Westminster Fire Department ambulance to a MedEvac helicopter that was waiting in the parking lot of Franklin Senior High School in Reisterstown.
The windshield of the truck was shattered by the impact, and the front end was buckled.
Trooper Lang said police do not plan to file charges against the driver, and there was no indication that alcohol played a role in the accident.
One westbound lane of Route 140 was kept open following the accident, but traffic backed up as far as the Northern Landfill.
