Four people were injured, including one man who was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, in a four-vehicle accident about 6:45 a.m. yesterday in Sykesville.
The accident, on Route 32 in Howard County near the Carroll County line, delayed traffic for about an hour. Commuters on Route 32 were backed up almost to Interstate 70 to the south and as far north as Route 26 in Eldersburg, said Sgt. Gary L. Gardner, a Howard County police spokesman.
Brian David Chelden, 25, of the 600 block of Lynn Way in Sykesville, was flown by state police helicopter to Shock Trauma, where he was listed in fair condition yesterday.
Three other people were taken by ambulance to Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, where they were treated and released, a hospital spokesman said.
The accident occurred when the driver of a 1993 BMW, traveling west on River Road, attempted to turn left into the southbound lane of Route 32, police said.
The BMW, driven by Sue Yim, 37, of the 1000 block of River Road, pulled into the path of Mr. Chelden's 1985 Ford Escort, which was heading north on Route 32, police said.
After the collision, the BMW came to rest in the northbound lane of Route 32 and was struck in the rear by a 1993 Ford Ranger truck. The impact sent Ms. Yim's BMW spinning into the rear of a southbound 1990 Nissan truck, police said.
Ms. Yim and her passenger, Jean Yim, 14, were treated and released at Howard County General, as was 34-year-old John Bryan Gray, of the 1200 block of Tugwell Drive in Baltimore, who was driving the Ford truck, Howard County police said.
The driver of the Nissan truck, Richard G. Piquet Sr., 56, of the 800 block of Wilda Drive in Westminster, refused treatment, Howard County police said.
Ms. Yim was charged with failure to yield the right of way, Howard County police said. Mr. Gray was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.
In an accident in Westminster, an 84-year-old Sykesville man was flown to Shock Trauma yesterday after his car struck the rear of another about 9:30 a.m. on Route 27 at Lucabaugh Mill Road.
Walter Peterson, of the 2600 block of Sykesville Road, was driving north on Route 27 in his 1985 Ford Escort when he collided with a Ford Taurus that was slowing to make a left turn onto Lucabaugh Mill Road, state police said.
The driver of the Taurus, Esther Davis Chedekel of Lucabaugh Mill Road, was not injured.
The Taurus was knocked forward and came to rest facing south in the southbound lane of the highway.
The Escort struck the guardrail on the right shoulder before stopping.
Mr. Peterson was removed from his car by Westminster fire and rescue workers and taken to the Random House parking lot, where he was transferred to police helicopter for the flight to Shock Trauma.
