ARCADIA, CALIF. — ARCADIA, Calif. -- Terry Dehere the basketball player, who will be flying to Denver on Saturday, hopes Dehere the horse will be flying across the finish line at Santa Anita.
The Los Angeles Clippers' rookie has to travel with the team and isn't expected to be at Santa Anita to watch his namesake run in the 1 1-16-mile Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
Dehere the colt, however, will have lots of supporters at the track. Members of Terry's family, including his mother Greta, will be on hand to rally their favorite thoroughbred.
And the colt figures to have plenty of others cheering for him since he's the 6-5 early favorite.
Owner Robert Brennan is a Seton Hall alumnus who has named several of his racehorses after former Seton Hall Pirates players, like Dehere.
Dehere has seen his namesake run in person only once, when jTC the grandson of Secretariat won at Saratoga for one of his five career victories.
"The horse that was named after me turned out to be a pretty good one," Dehere said. "I wasn't one to follow horse racing to any extent because it wasn't something I was really interested in.
"But after I found out that this horse was named after me, I started to really follow thoroughbred racing. After I went to the track once and actually watched him run in person, it was exciting to me. It's a whole different atmosphere. Since then, I've been trying to follow whatever the horse is doing."
