2 arrested after clerk is killed in Calvert Co. Man, 36, stabbed by would-be robber

A clerk in a Calvert County convenience store was stabbed to death early yesterday when he turned his back on a bandit armed with a knife, state police said.

The clerk, Frederick William Christian Jr., 36, of the 7000 block of Boston Ave. in Rose Haven, in southern Anne Arundel County, was pronounced dead at Calvert Memorial Hospital at 3:44 a.m., about half an hour after two suspects in his death were arrested.

Forrest Jones, 32, of the 900 block of Plum Point Road in Huntingtown, and Lori Ann Becraft, 30, of the 200 block of Shannon Ave. in Prince Frederick, were arrested by Anne Arundel County police in Lothian after a second convenience store was robbed.

Both were charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery and were being held in the Calvert County Detention Center without bail, state police said.

Mr. Christian was killed in the 7-Eleven store on Route 260 in Paris Oaks. Investigators said a man and a woman walked in about 2:30 a.m. and brought a gallon of milk to the counter. The man grabbed Mr. Christian, held a knife to his throat and ordered him to open the cash register, said Detective Sgt. Bobby Rawlings of the state police in Prince Frederick.

When Mr. Christian struggled with the drawer, the man let go of him, Sergeant Rawlings said. Mr. Christian turned to walk away, and the man stabbed him in the back as several customers watched. The couple then fled without getting any money, the sergeant said.

About half an hour later, a man brandishing a large kitchen knife walked alone into a 7-Eleven on Route 4 in Dunkirk and demanded money, Sergeant Rawlings said. The clerk turned over the money, and the man left.

Police broadcast a description of the couple and the blue, 1990 Toyota Tercel they were believed to be driving.

At 3:11 a.m., Anne Arundel County Officer Keith Hoffman noticed a car parked behind some tobacco barns on Route 4 near a Dash In convenience store and thought the passenger fit the description of one of the suspects in the stabbing and robbery.

He stopped the car, questioned the couple and arrested them.
