Arundel upsets Chesapeake-AA in girls soccer

Barb Muller and Kristen Smeby each scored a goal, leading host Arundel (10-1, 6-0) past No. 5 Chesapeake-AA (7-2-1, 3-2), 2-0, in an Anne Arundel County 4A girls soccer game yesterday.

After playing a scoreless first half, Muller, a senior left wing, put in a loose ball in front of the net. Later in the second half, Smeby scored on a corner kick. Shauna Donahue had an assist and Marcia Levin made six saves for the unranked Wildcats.

Arundel coach Paul Yannuzzi called last week's 3-1 victory over Broadneck the "stepping stone" to yesterday's upset.

"They went in [against Chesapeake] and wanted the game more," he said. "Chesapeake is a wonderful team. I had heard all these stories about how rough and tumble they are, but they play a good brand of soccer. The weather was bad and our girls are mudders. When it rains, you put your money on Arundel."
