Mark Kiefer, St. Mary's
Kiefer's kicking and punting led the Saints to their second win (2-2) in the Maryland Scholastic Association A Conference by 10-7 over then No. 12 St. Paul's on Friday. His 27-yard field goal with 1:30 left provided the margin of victory, and on his ensuing kickoff, Kiefer made a game-saving tackle on the Crusaders' Chris Berrier. The Saints' premier kicker also had six punts at an NFL average of 50.1 yards.
Wendy Spry, Old Mill
Spry became the first boy or girl from Old Mill to win a state golf title with a 174 total over two days at the University of Maryland College Park last Thursday and Friday. Spry's four-stroke state title victory came on the heels of the county championship, which she won on Tuesday with an 89 at Eisenhower Country Club.
Mike Drocella, North County
Drocella ran for 188 yards and two touchdowns (runs of 5 and 2 yards) on 27 carries to pace the then ninth-ranked Knights (7-1) to a shocking 40-6 romp at then No. 7 Annapolis on Friday night.
Ronnie Green, Severna Park
Moved to the right side on the defensive line by coach Andy Borland against Glen Burnie, Green in the coach's words "shut down their running attack cold," as the Falcons limited the Gophers to 157 yards rushing in a 28-6 victory.
In leading the Falcons (5-3) to victory, the 6-foot-4, 260-pound senior blue-chipper was in on a dozen tackles and on the other side of the ball opened the gates for 360 yards rushing for the winners.
John Hopple, Archbishop Spalding
This sophomore end caught five passes from Ken Kulesz for 131 yards and three touchdowns (30, 29 and 18 yards) as the young Cavaliers won their first game of the season by 20-7 over Friends of Baltimore.
Emmanuel Uche, North County
Uche scored three goals and had one assist as the Knights of coach Steve Malone took three games by 3-0 over Broadneck, 3-2 over Severna Park and 3-1 over Arundel.
Michelle Salmon, Old Mill
Salmon had a pair of three-goal games last week, giving her 12 goals in her last four outings as the Patriots beat Annapolis, 4-0, and Southern, 6-0. The hat trick against Annapolis enabled Salmon to eclipse the county career record for goals (80) set by Meade's Amanda Simmons.
Jan Naccari, St. Mary's
Naccari fired in three goals as the Saints defeated Southern, 4-1.
Boys cross country
Danny Zamarripa, South River
Zamarripa won the Chesapeake Invitational Cross Country Meet with a time of 15 minutes, 48 seconds Thursday, six seconds better than Old Mill's Jason Reckner.
Katie Forthofer, Broadneck
This Bruins junior was splendid in a matchup of top 10 teams as then No. 3 Broadneck overcame a 2-0 deficit to win three straight games and take a 3-2 match over then No. 8 Glen Burnie by 14-16, 5-15, 15-6, 15-9 and 15-8. Forthofer had 19 kills, five blocks and was 8-for-10 serving.
