The Union Bridge Town Council launched the new municipal offices last night by meeting there for the monthly council meeting, at which it adopted an ordinance defining public nuisances.
The ordinance was introduced last month after Town Attorney John T. Maguire III presented revised language for an outdated law on the subject.
The previous law included references to such illegal behavior as allowing livestock to roam the street.
One section of the old law called for barking dogs that annoyed a neighborhood to be destroyed at the mayor's discretion.
The amended law addresses public nuisances such as overgrown weeds, dumping, dilapidated buildings and ice on the sidewalk. The council unanimously approved the changed ordinance.
The town is waiting for information from the state Department of Natural Resources before deciding whether 10 acres of the Phillips parcel, along Pipe Creek and Route 75, should be designated a wetlands park.
Mayor Perry L. Jones Jr. said the council is not against the idea, but would like to know more about the ramifications. He said he was concerned that the town might not be able to use that land for anything other than a park. Pipes, for example, cannot be placed into a wetland area, he said. "If we turn that into a wetland, and it's designated that way, we can't ever cross that creek for anything," he said.
The council also voted to participate again in the countywide committee addressing cable TV access and rates. Mayor Jones was authorized to speak on behalf of the town.
In other matters, Councilwoman Vickie Greenwood resigned as chairwoman of the Town Hall Funding Committee because she said the duty was becoming "too much."
