Kate has joined the list of children's authors. Baltimore-based Vangar Publishers has printed her story, "Door to Discovery," in the company's newly released book, "The Friendship Tree and Other Stories for Children by Children."
Kate, a junior, submitted the story last year as part of a contest Vangar was sponsoring. She received a trophy and three copies of the book, which includes offerings from 20 other young authors.
Kate's story is about a young girl whose father has been relocated to a new area. She resents moving and has problems dealing with losing her old friends. As she settles into her new room, she discovers a small door on top of her closet. Curious, she opens it and discovers a land with meadows of green grass and a girl named Lydia, who has a pair of wings.
It wasn't too hard for Kate to dream up the story. She once lived in a house where there also was a small door in her closet. But unlike Andrea, the character in her book, she never ventured to open it.
Aside from writing, Kate works on her school's yearbook, the "Ionic Column," and sings in the school's choir. She also is a member of the school's "It's Academic" team.
Plans:Kates wants to study either science or medicine when she goes to college, but she intends to continue her writing as a hobby.
Her comments:"I write all the time, but I've never been published before."
