Pellegrini earns 4th shutout in Towson victory COLLEGE SOCCER


Senior goalkeeper Rich Pellegrini (John Carroll) posted his fourth shutout and 19th of his career as Towson State (6-8-1) beat Virginia Military Institute (3-11-2), 2-0, yesterday in Lexington, Va.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead 11 minutes into the game when freshman Jamie Tuckey scored off a pass from Erik Washington.

The Tigers added another goal midway through the second half when junior Pat Coyle scored his team-high eighth goal. Sophomore Todd Hicks (Bowie) earned his 10th assist on the play -- tying the Towson single-season record set by Ricky Bush in 1991.

Women's soccer

* Maryland 6, Monmouth 5: Senior forward Tania Sheremeta scored off a corner kick in double overtime to complete No. 14 Maryland's biggest comeback of the year, as the Terps rallied from a 4-1 halftime deficit in College Park.

Tricia Taliaferro scored two goals for Maryland (13-3-1).

* Notre Dame 3, W. & Lee 0: Sophomore forward Corina Riismandel scored two goals to lead College of Notre Dame (11-4-1) past Washington & Lee in Lexington, Va.

* Fairfield 3, Loyola 2: Kim Chula scored the game-winner with 5:27 left in the second half to lift host Fairfield (13-2-1, 7-0) over Loyola (11-4-2, 4-1-2) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game in Fairfield, Conn. Fairfield clinched the top seed in Saturday's MAC Tournament at Manhattan College in New York.

* UNC-Greensboro 8, UMBC 0: Stephanie Dearlove scored twice in the first half to lead host UNC-Greensboro (12-6, 7-0) over UMBC (9-10, 4-3) in a Big South game in Greensboro, N.C.
