Name: Helen Suh, 17, of Ellicott City.

Hobbies and other activities: Helen enjoys writing and communications. She is the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper at Mount Hebron High School. Helen works part-time at the Bagel Bin. She has volunteered for the past four years with the Columbia Festival of the Arts. Last year she volunteered at a shelter and soup kitchen in Baltimore. She now volunteers at Grassroots, a 24-hour crisis intervention telephone line with an emergency shelter and transitional housing program for homeless people.

Organization's comments: "Helen has volunteered at Grassroots for much longer than the three-month commitment we ask," said P.A.T. "Pat" Daughtry, a children's counselor at Grassroots. "She comes in one evening each week to play with the children. Helen loves children, and you can tell by their response to her that the feeling is mutual."

Volunteer's comments: "I volunteer because I like to work with people, especially children. I never had a chance to baby-sit because of my schedule. I feel volunteering is a good use of my time. It gives perspective to my life and a sense of personal satisfaction," she said.

Helen has been at Grassroots for the past two years. She plays with the children for about two hours one day a week so the parents can work with counselors or get job training. She takes them outside to play, reads to them or helps with their schoolwork.

About Ms. Suh: Helen has lived in Howard County since moving to Columbia from Baltimore at age 6. She lives in Ellicott City with her parents, Allen and Alice Suh, her brother, Steve, and her cousin, Jung Hee. She is a senior at Mount Hebron High School.
