Cow grazing in pasture is killed by 2 gunshots Guernsey's value put at $1,000

A guernsey cow grazing on a South County farm was shot and killed Sunday, and county police are searching for a suspect.

Farmer Harry James Smith Jr. told police he was inside his house in Tracy's Landing about 6:30 p.m. Sunday when he heard several gunshots.

He got into his car and drove until he found one cow on the ground and other cows running across the pasture.

Police said the cow, worth an estimated $1,000, was shot once in the head and once in the neck. The cow died a short time after being hit.

Mr. Smith said that while he was standing in the pasture, near the 6400 block of Franklin Gibson Road, he saw a man with dark hair driving a small pickup parked on the side of the road. He said the man was watching him.

Mr. Smith told police he got a partial license plate number but could provide no other description.
