Flute and guitar make the music at Walters Art Gallery

The timbres of the flute and guitar combine beautifully. They can be heard together this afternoon at 2 when the fine guitar-flute duo of Benjamin Verdery and flutist Rie Schmidt performs at the Walters Art Gallery. Their program, which features some of Verdery's own compositions, includes music by the wonderful Brazilian composer of tangos, Astor Piazzola, and Toru Takemitsu's atmospheric "Toward the Sea." Tickets for the concert are $15; $12 for museum members and seniors. For information, call (410) 547-9000.

The Chamber Music Society of Baltimore opens its season at 8 p.m. tomorrow in the Baltimore Museum of Art with an appearance by the New York new music ensemble Continuum.

It is hard to imagine the history of 20th-century music since 1966 -- the year of Continuum's founding -- without this ensemble. It has probably performed more important premieres than any other group of its kind. The programs of Continuum's co-directors Joel Sachs and Cheryl Seltzer have always been adventurous, and Monday's concert will be no exception. Included are works by three American originals, John Cage, Morton Feldman and Conlon Nancarrow, and music by Azerbaijani and Ukrainian composers.

Tickets for the concert are $15; $13 for museum members and seniors; $5 for students. For information, call (410) 486-1140.
