LINDA MASHKELGOSHA of Glen Burnie and CARL SCHEFFEL JR. of Pasadena are co-founders of Visions for America Inc., a nonprofit consulting firm to charitable organizations.

Former co-workers, they decided to lend their professional skills in the fields of engineering and administration to charitable nonprofit organizations.

Volunteer's comments: "About a year and a half ago, we created Visions as we explored different avenues of what we could do for the homeless," Ms. Mashkelgosha said. "We decided to use our skills to help others who are already providing services by becoming consultants to nonprofits and do things they would normally have to pay for.

"For instance, if a charity or nonprofit wanted to use or renovate a vacant building, we could inspect it, make a list of what needed to be done to meet safety requirements and come up with ideas to rehabilitate it and so on.

"Shortly after we became incorporated, we contacted Catholic Charities to see if they could use us in any way," she said. "They were very responsive. Our first work came in the fall of 1992, as we inspected a building in Baltimore for them.

"Catholic Charities also led us to Sarah's House, where we were so impressed by the efforts and dedication we saw there [that] we have sort of adopted Sarah's House," Ms. Mashkelgosha said.

"For instance, we're handling the application for a grant to pay for a salaried coordinator for people who have gone through Sarah's House and need support as they get out into the mainstream."
